Hey! Long time no blag
Hello! Umm, sorry about not writing for the last nine months. Here, it’s an apologetic ridiculous picture!
It is my beloved Suzanne and me playing with the green screen in San Francisco’s Japantown! Which brings me to my next point: seeing Suzanne (and all the other fantastic people of California) is no longer a twice-a-year prospect, because I just moved to Los Angeles! Which means that the title of this site isn’t even correct anymore, since I am no longer in the city nor am I misanthropic, really. Now I am living in Burbank and working for Disney Animation as a technical director trainee on “Tangled,” which is coming out at the end of the year. I just started three weeks ago, but I’m already pretty sure it’s going to be spectacular.
I want say I’m sad to have left New York, just like I always wanted to be happy about living there (especially since getting to live in New York was one of the biggest draws to working for Google), but it just wasn’t the right place for me. A friend from high school who’s working in finance there said something I really identify with:
“This weekend, going back to [college town] has made me realize that I have changed as a person. Because of this job and this city, I have become less patient, less nice, and simply more snappish. People generally just annoy me. It is quite sad. I don’t wish to be this rude bitch, but I cannot stop myself. I use to be able to discover my inner peace, now, no matter how hard I concentrate, I am unable to find any type of peace.”
It’s so truuuuue! Living there just made me all stressed out and into a person that I didn’t like. Maybe it was the fact that my room was “like a jail cell, but smaller!” (to quote the always-sympathetic Jason):I guess the furniture was nicer than jail, but seriously, that picture was taken from as far into the corner as I could possibly squish.
So, yeah. It was a pretty depressing place to be (for many reasons other than having but 70 square feet of personal space). But now I am making a new start! On the day after I got to LA, I drove up to Berkeley to see my college friends for the weekend and on the way there, I was like, “What is this strange feeling that’s bubbling up inside of me? I think…I think I’m happy!” So that is great.
And in the interest of no longer being a negative nancy all the time, here is a list of things that I will miss about New York (not comprehensive):
Being able to see my family just by taking the bus
Okay, so this is from when they came to visit me, but it is still a nice picture of them so there you go.
Eric and my friends
The delicious, delicious restaurants
…such as Autour de Monde! This is Eric looking disgruntled at my brunchtime photography.
Random moments of delight such as encountering a troop of David the Gnomeses wandering the streets:
Along the same lines, witnessing such spectacles as a spontaneous dance battle (or “serving”) in Times Square:
The creative street art/vandalism:
Being close to the center of the action, even though I didn’t take advantage of this nearly as much as I should have (see above about having become an embittered old shrew). I did, however, make it to the Daily Show last spring with Eric!
Eric was apparently much less excited about this than I was.
Cameras aren’t allowed in the studio, but I did manage to take this picture of the basement:
Just think, Jon Stewart may have touched that very stack of coolers!
Okay, with that I am going to call it a night. I hope most of this post made sense. It feels weird to write in the blag again after so long, but hopefully it won’t be such a rare occurrence what with my new-found happiness and all. Later, everybody!

Welcome back to the west coast! I usually drive up to LA for a weekend once every 6 weeks or so; it would be awesome to see you the next time I’m in town.

Holy crap, yeah! That would be amazing. Let me know the next time you come up!

So our paths cross again, Ms. Eisinger! I’m in Pasadena working for a solar company (have been since I left Berkeley in ’08). Biff, Lindsay Claiborn, Nick Boechler, and Nick Saldivar all live around here too . . . so if you ever want to grab some coffee (or start a marching band), hit us up. Oh, and I still owe you at least an ice cream cone or something for the $$ Berkeley gave me for that paper :-)

Omg Chris, yay! I would love to take you up on your offer of starting a marching band. We should call ourselves “Gibbons with Ribbons!”
