I`m in Japan and I can`t figure out this keyboard, halp!
Japan`s pretty freaking rad. Oh wait! I think I just found the apostrophe key. Who puts the apostrophe over the 7?! That’s just not right. Plus shifting to make an apostrophe makes my brain hurt. Plus every so often I press the Japaneseify key and it doesn’t ever turn off! Until you close the window, so if I cut this entry short that’s why.
I’m almost up to my monthly uploading limit on flickr, so we’ll see if I can motivate myself enough to create a new account so there can be more pictures before September. Also, internet is freaking expensive here and now the time pressure is making it hard for me to think of what I was going to say. Umm, I’m being the victim of racism for the first real time in my life. Because I fit into like five categories of things you’re not supposed to be while you’re in Japan! Like, female. And foreign. And vegetarian and not stickly thin and not able to speak Japanese. Nur. But Japan is still really freaking awesome. I’m glad I’m not doing JET right now because I’d probably get super depressed and quit in the first week, but I do think I’ll be ready to do it after a few years at Google. I think learning the language would help a lot. The other things I can’t so much change, but it’s probably worth the racism to live here on account of it would be like living in the future. Oh also! It’s literally impossible to book a hotel in Kyoto for less than $150. It’s so ridiculous! Nur.
Today we went to Kiddieland, which is this ridiculously cute store that Caitlin recommended. I bought some ridiculously cute stationery that’s all kind of getting used instead of postcards for Japan. Then we went across the street and saw all the goth kids in their crazy costumes! For example:
Also, these are the characters on the stationery:
On a completely unrelated topic, I’m getting kind of nervous about spending my birthday alone. Last night I went to Roppongi (the seedy bar district) and met some Americans and it was kind of cool to be around other people who speak English, but they were not at all the kind of person I enjoy spending time with and I’m just worried that that’s what everyone is going to be like when I’m on my own in Europe. I guess it’s not a big deal because there are going to be a bunch of other birthdays (at least there better be or someone’s gonna pay) so it’s okay to have one lonely one.
I’d really like to do a big picture thing and talk about them all, but I think that’s gonna have to wait for a country where their keyboards are a little more English-friendly and their internet doesn’t cost $10 an hour. In a nutshell: there’s awesome Engrish everywhere, the convenience stores and vending machines are 110% magical, and the gardens and temples are really pretty. Also, Ratatouille’s already out on DVD in Thailand, haha. I’ll be really interested to see if that’s the actual DVD cover when it comes out for not-bootlegged. My money’s on very much no. Okay curses I pressed the button nur using the character map to write this later everyone

« A million billion pictures!» I'm in Paris being ironically afraid of rats!
If a Kyoto room is too expensive, may I suggest staying at a hostel in Osaka and taking a “department store” local trian to Kyoto for daytime sightseeing. Love G’ma & G’pa
