Hey kids! I’m feeling a little better and there’s freeee internet at this hostel, so it’s time for an updatearooney! How exciting.
Meeting up with Nick in Sydney was kind of a fiasco. Basically I do not understand how anyone did anything before cell phones. I went to the airport to pick him up and waited for an hour and a half after his flight landed and still couldn’t find him so I figured we’d missed each other in the throng of people, but really he’d been stuck in customs until ten minutes after I left. So that pretty much blew, but in the end we met up at the hostel and now everything is awesome! He made me this awesome necklace that looks like this which is so pretty and I lurrrrve it. And it’s fun to play with but whenever I take it off he makes a big deal about how I hate it. I don’t know, it’s funny. You must have to be there.
Here’s a random thought that keeps popping into my head: the worst part about being in countries where the drive on the other side of the road is almost getting killed at every intersection. The best part is when a baby is sitting shotgun and it looks like a BABY is driving the CAR! So cute.
Today I sicked around Sydney in the morning and then we took the bus to Port Macquarie, where they have wild koalas, kangaroos, and dingoes! Can’t wait. And tomorrow we’re going to a koala park where you get to pet the koalas. Also can’t wait. Perhaps my dream of adopting a koala baby and raising it as a human child will finally become a reality!
We had a bit of a scare tonight because Port Macquarie is a pretty small town and we hadn’t made hostel reservations because it has so many hostels, but then the first one we went to was closed for the night and I was worried I’d led us into a deathtrap. But then the second one was only two blocks away and it was open and super cheap and is giving us free internet, breakfast, and bike rentals! The only thing is it’s a little creepy. The walls are all brightly colored and there’s a huge mural of a koala in the game room, but the guy running it seems nice and, more importantly, non-serial-killer-like.
We kind of didn’t do much in New Zealand after Mount Doom because we were so spent for days afterwards. I think the walk-through aquarium in Napier was the highlight of the trip back to Auckland. Oh also, I was kind of bummed that we didn’t get to go to Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter in Auckland before leaving on the bus trip, so it was on the top of the list of things I wanted to do when we got back there. Who could say no to an indoors Antarctic environment where you get to ride heated snow cats around!? Visions of seals and penguins frolicking on iceburgs while we cruised our snowmobile over massive snow drifts danced through my head, but then it turned out to be like the penguin house at the zoo and the snow cats are just little carts that go around on a track for five minutes. And there’s an orca whale eating a seal, but it’s made out of fiberglass. Worst. Letdown. Ever. Oh curses, 40 seconds of internet left. Later dudes!
