Freaky little video!
Yaay! That’s Herve and Barbara doing their little yodel that they kept doing on the Fraser Island trip. Basically it is totally awesome. Oh Fraser Island. Herve drove our 4×4 most of the time and he was really good at not flipping us over or making us feel like we were going to flip over.
We just got back from Whitsunday Island and I don’t mean to have a sucky attitude that ruins everything, but I really didn’t like it that much. I wish I’d known that we were only going to get off the boat for like three hours and the rest of the time was going to be spent sailing, which is really windy and cold and pretty boring and I don’t really like wind in my face even though you’re supposed to. Today I got so excruciatingly bored that I kept staring at the waves trying to figure out how to make a fluids simulation and after two hours of nonstop staring I think I got it. But I guess I’m really glad I went because the food was tasty and probably the healthiest I’ve eaten in a month and also Whitehaven beach was completely amazing for the two hours we got to be on land. Hold on, I’m sure I can scrounge up some pictures.
This is a sting ray that I made friends with! We had a little tea party. But actually it was ridiculous because there was so much clear, shallow water that you could walk right up to him and I got like a foot away and got close enough to see his eyes and then we both got scared and separated. Did you know sting rays and manta rays evolved from sharks but flattened out? That’s why they’re so cartilaginous. I told Nick that when I showed him Stingey and he said cartilaginous is a good word.
This is the ship. The top bed was mine. That’s my backpack that I got for free along with some really not too bad looking sunglasses when these two Japanese girls got rid of a whole bunch of awesome travel things. Gold mine! Made all the sweeter by the fact that I’d been looking all over New Zealand for a sturdier backpack and non-broken sunglasses that didn’t cost $50. Also did you know that sneakers cost around $200 in New Zealand?! Freaking ridiculous. I know this because my shoes are like a millimeter too short but I toughed it out until we got to the warmer part of Australia and now I’m going to wear sandals until we get to Bangkok, where everything costs a dollar. Gonna be great. Plus Brett and I are trying to meet up there!
The sand was in balls like dippin dots! How weird. Nick thinks it happened because the sand is 92% silica on Whitehaven Beach because it comes from a quartz-lined fault line which makes the sand really fine and then when the rain hits it, it forms balls but I know it’s really because the Whitsunday Island tourism bureau uses a dippin dots machine every morning.
A bird! He’s like, “I’m a burrrd.” He came to the tea party but then the sting ray ate him. It was cute.
This is the beach. It was a lot sunnier but I underexposed the picture on account of I was temporarily blinded by the shiny white sand.
Aaaaand some people. This was taken through my (delightfully free) sunglasses because I was getting frustrated at everything looking prettier through my sunglasses.
The people on the boat were really nice. There were like a bajillion of us reading Harry Potter. Jono finished his copy on the beach yesterday and then I picked it up and pretty much didn’t put it down until I finished it last night. Because time was of the essence because some fratty guys on the boat kept yelling that they were going to tell us all the ending. I thought it was freaking amazing and even better that I’d expected. Then I went back to the first book in the Wheel of Time series and it was such a letdown because the series are really similar in having a big evil force and a shining perfect hero and I kept getting fed up and being like, “you’re not Harry Potter, get out of here!” but I think we’re on better terms now. I just wish there were more Harry Potters. At least I read it super fast so I can go back in a little while and enjoy it pretty much just as much. Yay, time for ice cream!
